How to Break the Winter Blues at Work

With it officially being Winter, and the cold setting in (at least it is here in Ottawa), it’s easy to get pulled into a winter funk. The holiday season can be a lot of fun, but there are other times it can be dark and gloomy. We’ve put together a small list of things that you can do in the office to help stay motivated and break out of the winter blues

Create an upbeat, office-appropriate playlist.

It’s surprising how much some upbeat tunes can improve your mood. Try playing them on a portable speaker if everyone in the office is okay with it, or listen with some earphones if that’s more appropriate in your office environment. Not only will the playlist cheer you up, but it’ll block out background noise so that you can get more done!

Spruce up your office with some indoor plants.

Just because there’s snow and ice outside doesn’t mean that there can’t be some greenery inside. Try picking up a couple plants to liven the atmosphere. Bamboo, succulents and snake plants all make great, low-maintenance indoor plants!

Reward your hard work with some holiday-themed treats

Have a deadline that you need a little extra motivation to meet? Bring in something tasty, like hot chocolate mix, and reward yourself for getting your work done!


Stay on top of your day to day tasks.

Falling behind on your to-do list is a great way to ruin your work motivation. Make sure you set yourself realistic and achievable goals and to-do lists. If you’re a visually oriented person, try writing or drawing your ideas and goals on a notepad or whiteboard. Also, be sure to keep track of your wins – remembering everything that you’ve already accomplished in a day can motivate you to keep pushing!

Go for a walk on your lunch break.

We know it’s cold, but getting your blood moving and inhaling some fresh air is a great way to take a mental break. You’ll feel refreshed heading back to your desk, even after a 10 minute walk.

Try a full-spectrum light lamp

These lamps simulate natural light and have been shown to boost energy and mood. They’re especially useful if you’re one of those people who has to go to and from work in the dark. Make your office feel a litter sunnier to get through the grey winter!
